When teeth cannot be preserved … A guide to restoring healthy smiles and bodies with skilled extractions

At Gentle Dentistry of Newnan PC, we live up to our name. Due to our warm, welcoming, non-judgmental, and approachable team, led by Dr. Ria C. Sahara, even the most “dentophobic” patients quickly come to trust us. They travel from across west-central Georgia and beyond for the care that they need to have both a healthy smile and a healthy body. Due to this approach, built on a foundation of consistent and regular dental check-ups, patients can often avoid needing extractions or removing badly damaged and severely decayed teeth.

Dr. Sahara can preserve a damaged tooth when detected sufficiently early into the decay or disease process. Now, if a tooth cannot be preserved, we typically recommend prompt replacement. Gaps in our smiles can threaten the health of the neighboring teeth. They can affect our “bite” and place undue stress and strain on the jaw joints and other tissues. Ultimately, a complete set of teeth supports what we strive for with all our patients: Their highest quality of life and “best” selves.

Wisdom teeth are the exception to the rule of promptly replacing teeth. As the last teeth to develop in the mouth, wisdom teeth often have insufficient room to grow through the gums properly. These teeth become trapped or “impacted” in the jaw. To avoid or quickly resolve undesirable complications, we monitor the development of these teeth during routine appointments. We recommend prompt removal of these “third molars” before symptoms present themselves that interfere with your sleep, school, work, ability to eat comfortably, and just your day-to-day life. Replacement of these teeth is not necessary for the health and function of your smile.

Generally, removing wisdom teeth and any other teeth that are not intact or visible above the gum line is considered a “surgical” procedure; however, we may be able to remove the affected tooth as a “simple extraction.” This process involves special instruments to gently loosen and lift the tooth from its socket.

Again, many of these situations can be avoided with our fear-free, routine dental visits. Do not suffer from a failing, aching tooth! We can get you out of pain and back to your happy self again with emergency care, the Gentle Dentistry of Newnan PC way. Call (470) 686-6667 to reach our kind and skilled team.
